What is a VLAN?

A VLAN, or Virtual Local Area Network, is a technology that enables the segmentation of a physical network into smaller, logical networks. This segmentation facilitates more efficient management of resources and improves network performance by controlling broadcast traffic. Instead of physically separating devices on different hardware switches for segregation, VLANs allow devices on the same physical network to be grouped logically based on factors like function, department, or project, regardless of their physical location.

This capability enhances security as sensitive data can be kept separate from general traffic.
